Methodology

Why 3D Animation?

We want to create the equivalent of a textbook for the classroom — but in 3D. Engineering is inherently three-dimensional, and you need to see it that way to truly understand it. Flat diagrams and static illustrations can only carry you so far; the moment you try to grasp how a transistor switches, how a chip is fabricated layer by layer, or how radio waves propagate through a room, two dimensions stop being enough. By rebuilding these concepts in 3D, we let students step inside the technology of the modern world and see it the way engineers do — not as abstractions on a page, but as real, working systems.

Our Commitment to Human Craft

At Branch Education, every 3D model, animation, and visual you see in our videos is built by human hands. Our animators, modelers, and researchers put significant time into crafting accurate, beautiful representations of complex engineering concepts. That human effort is the core of what makes Branch, Branch.

AI tools have become widely available, and we want to be transparent about exactly how — and how not — we use them.

The Upcoming Videos and Course on How AI Works

AI is complex and crazy; to us, it feels like a mix between the Industrial Revolution and the discovery of the atom and atomic energy (of course, we were alive through neither of these ages).

Our goal is to provide a thorough explanation of how AI works and how hardware runs it, while introducing and discussing many of the ethical and policy positions. Essentially, we are trying to stay neutral on the debate while providing as much information as possible, as we believe it’s important for the general population to be accurately informed.

What We Do Not Use AI For

We do not use AI for any script, audio, or visual element that you see or hear.

  • Voiceover — We use real human voices (our narrator Phil), not AI-generated speech or synthetic voice clones.
  • 3D models and assets — All geometry and materials are built by our artists from scratch. We spend dozens of hours tearing down each piece of hardware, taking high-resolution reference images, and then rebuilding each component in Blender. For example, AI has no clue what’s inside a PlayStation 5 or a high-end graphics card, and the only way we learn about and model it is by tearing one down ourselves.
  • Animation — Every single keyframe, camera sweep, electron simulation, and exploded assembly motion is meticulously animated by hand in Blender. AI cannot understand physical mechanisms, microarchitecture timing, or intuitive educational pacing, which is why 100% of our motion design is human-crafted from first principles.
  • Research — All technical documents, e.g., white papers, textbooks, spec sheets, patents, and everything else, are read through and understood by Teddy and other humans.
  • Script Writing and Editing — Teddy thoroughly thinks through the direction of every script. Every draft and revision of the script is read over and edited by Teddy or his editors (one of whom is his mom) and reviewers.
  • Visual Design — Our visual hierarchies, color coding, graphic layouts, typography, diagrams, and aesthetic direction are designed and established completely by Mike and our creative team to ensure clarity and intuitive learning.

What We Use AI For

  • For research, we use it like a more powerful Google. It helps us quickly find original sources, patents, useful chapters in textbooks, and technical documents.
  • For script writing, we use it like a more powerful spell/syntax/grammar checker. Every script is fully written by humans, but having an additional reviewer is useful.
  • For animation, we use it as an additional sounding board or brainstorming partner for visual angles or analogies for complex technical concepts.
  • For website development, many parts of this website were created by humans, but a few technical integrations were made with the assistance of AI.

AI is a tool, and we will never use it as a creator of any of our content.

Why This Matters to Us

Educational content needs to be trustworthy. When we show you how a GPU works, or how electrons tunnel through a transistor, the accuracy of that depiction matters enormously. Our team spends weeks verifying technical details, consulting engineers, and checking our models against real hardware.

We believe that the care and craft our humans put into every frame is part of what makes Branch Education reliable. We're not going to shortcut that.
